Church Declares, “God Doesn’t Answer Prayer”

16 07 2013

Much to the consternation of the congregation, a gentleman purchased land in their town and built a tavern on it.

The body was not going to put up with this, though, and made the tavern’s removal a matter of prayer.

During an electrical storm, the tavern was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.  The congregation rejoiced over the removal of this “den of iniquity.”

On the other hand, the tavern owner was highly upset. He’d been told that the church was praying for his business to fail. Incensed, he hired a lawyer and filed a law suit against the church, blaming their prayers for his loss.

Unwilling to pay for reconstruction of the tavern, the church also hired a lawyer, stating that their prayers were not the cause of the lightning strike that destroyed the man’s livelihood.

On the first day of the hearing, the judge, having heard both sides’ opening remarks, stated the following:

“Despite the outcome of this trial, one thing is certain. The tavern owner believes in the power of prayer…

…the church does not!”

This story was told by our pastor Sunday morning. I thought I’d share it with you.

The Bible says, “Ask and it shall be given to you.” Do we ask with expectancy?

Do we recognize and acknowledge when God has given the petitions we ask of Him?

The world is watching!

Have you ever found yourself doing something like this? If so, do tell!
