Mustard Guts

9 10 2013

Did you ever wonder what mustard guts look like? Probably not! Today we’re going to discuss them!

When Jesus’ statement about having the faith of a mustard seed comes up, what is your mental picture of the seed? Is it the little yellow balls we get in the spice section of the store? These aren’t what He referred to. They’re much too big! (They’re the balls on the black mark – not a very good image…sorry!)

Here’s a picture of Israeli mustard seeds:

As you can see, they don’t resemble what we normally see at all. Those tiny black specks…yeah,Β those are the mustard seeds to which Jesus referred. They are the size of ground pepper – and are, indeed, the smallest of seeds. I tried to count the seeds on this card – and lost track at around 50! I’ve learned that when Scripture doesn’t line up with what I know to be true, then guess which one is wrong? πŸ™‚ This is one of those times.

(We picked up this card with the mustard seeds from one of the sites we visited in Jerusalem.)

So what’s the point? Well, If you were thinking that you have to work up as much faith as a yellow mustard seed to move a mountain, I have good news for you. All you need is faith the size of the dot on this i ! God doesn’t ask much of us, does He?

The best news is that He gives us faith as a gift (Ephesians 2:8,9).

Most important is what we have faithΒ in. James 1 tells us that trials testΒ our faith. It is in the heat of a test that we discover where our faith lies. A boatload of faith in the wrong thing won’t get us very far, will it? (Thanks for pointing this out,Β vonhonnauldt!)

The next time someone tells you that you don’t have enough faith, just smile. Now you know how much faith it takes. πŸ˜‰

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you…

…and give you peace.

Love in Christ,

Tami

Totally blew my mind when I saw how tiny they are! Really no bigger than the dot over the i. Phew! That much will move a mountain, eh? Wow. πŸ˜‰

I’ve never liked the statement “you dont have enough faith, thats why”. Errrmmm..the fact that s/he is PRAYING is faith already!

Very good lesson. I hope that’s about the size of my faith right now, because I don’t know what I would do if it were any smaller. πŸ™‚

The tiniest amount of faith reaps great results. I’m always astonished by what God will do with my speck!

May I suggest that it’s not really about size, but substance. Faith the “size” of a watermelon is useless if it’s based on worldly thinking. The Lord is talking about that faith which comes from God, not something we can work up ourselves. The tiniest amount of THAT faith can do more than we can ever begin to imagine.

Mustard guts, indeed! πŸ™‚

Great point! Thanks for this comment. I may have to revise my post. I wrote it on the fly this morning…mostly wrestling with the photos.

Faith is a gift from God…definitely need to add that…and that the faith MUST be IN God. Great additions indeed. πŸ™‚
