Jesus Said “Go Away”

1 08 2013

My first and foremost responsibility, as a Christian, is to get my family “saved” – isn’t it?

Or is it?

Not if we follow Jesus’ example.

Very little of His ministry was done in His hometown…in fact, He was a “failure” there.

Familiarity breeds contempt.

The townspeople knew Him; had seen Him grow up. They knew His parents and His brothers and sisters.

“He was unable to do many works there because of their unbelief.” (Matthew 13:58)

It gets worse –

Jesus’ mom and siblings came to where He was teaching.

Why?

They thought He was nuts, and wanted to take Him home where He wouldn’t be such an embarrassment. (Mark 3:21, 31-35)

Awkward!

If Jesus was to approach salvation the way we do, He would have stayed home and tried to get His mother and siblings to believe in Him. Yet, we find that He was rarely in Nazareth. The three years of His ministry were spent everywhere but Nazareth.

He taught His disciples the same thing. In Matthew 10, He gave the twelve their ministry orders. They were to travel throughout Israel and preach, heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons.

While they were gone, did Jesus just “kick it” on the shores of Galilee?

Let’s read on:

Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach and preach in THEIR cities. Matthew 11:1

While the disciples were about the Father’s business, Jesus took care of their business at home.

Why didn’t he assign the disciples their own towns, their own families for ministry?

“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.”

(Matthew 13:57)

So, are we about the Father’s business, going wherever He sends us?

Or are we beating our heads against a wall at home, trying to save our family members?

News flash!!

We do not have the ability to save anyone.

Very often our determined “ministry” to family members only gets in Jesus’ way. After all, they’re not going to listen to us…

…they think we’re nuts!

It wasn’t until His family saw Him as the risen Lord that they believed in Him. The same is true of our family and friends. It takes an encounter with Jesus before they can see Him for who He really is. We cannot do this for them. Instead of helping, we may be standing in His way.

Let’s obey Jesus, minister to those He sends us to, and entrust our loved ones to Him.

Go away, and let Jesus do His work!

*****

Thank you, Sue, for pointing out a couple of obvious things I failed to include concerning lost loved ones:

1. Love them well

2. Pray for them whenever they come to mind

I love, love, love your blog!
I’m the only Christian in my whole family and though I pray for them to be saved, no one listens to me. Just like you said. I have an identical twin sister who’s not saved. I don’t want to lose her when it’s time for us to leave this earth, but there’s nothing, nothing, nothing I can do about it. Pray only. I’ve been praying for her and my brother for 31 years now.

Don’t give up. He honors our requests (an echo of His heart for them) by pursuing them to the end!

This is so true. I have tried saving my family for years and most times I get discouraged. But when I found that it wasn’t working I gave up preaching to them and just prayed for them. That decision was hard. It is much more easier said than done

Oh, and do I know that well!

I love my “God Box,” where I put a card for each person and give them to the Lord to save. In exchange, I ask Him to give me His love for each one. He did!

His own Mother thought he was crazy. Think of the miracles she witnessed . The appearance of an angel, A miraculous conception and birth, Kings from the east showing up, just living in his presence for years. This encourages me to not beat myself up over my times of unbelief over the years. I know this was not the focus of your blog, Its just what came to mind for me.

That’s okay. The “point” of a post is rarely the message God delivers to me through it.

I have found this to be so true also. Especially since they know us for what we really are, sinners. Great advice, go away and let Jesus do His thing! Awesome!

Easier said than done, I know from past experience!

Good one, Tami! He loves our family more than we possibly can, more than we can imagine.

Those of us who trust Jesus with our family while we reach out to others in his name know IT WORKS! Blogging at its finest!

Abba, I thank You that before we even ask, You’re already aware of our needs. I lift up this dear one to You and ask that Your presence would be especially tangible today. I love that You never ever leave us nor forsake us…don’t even blink! Wow.

Magnify Yourself today – not as in “get bigger,” but as in “let us see you as Big as You really are.” Thank You for hearing our prayers and for Your response. You’re our marvelous Father, and we love You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Meditate on Psalm 13 today…especially the end of the Psalm which reads, “But I trust in Your unfailing love. You have been good, and You will be good to me. 🙂

Love you!

I’m often the greatest roadblock for them. Lord, help me to leave them in Your capable hands!

Great point. The only thing I would add (from experience) is to keep loving them and never quit praying on their behalf! thanks

Such GREAT Truth!! If more of us would just realize this simple but powerful fact, we would stop running around in circles and wasting our energy ‘doing what we think we need to do’! We must be able to be still, know He is God and listen to His instruction on where HE wants us!! Beautifully said sister… you have a talent, Glory to God! For me, personally, I continue to lift up my lost loved ones in prayer and when I do I ask our Father to “send messengers after Your own heart to share Your Truth and Salvation”!

I like that prayer, and think I’ll borrow it! I threw all my lost loved ones Back in the Box. It’s the only way I can keep from trying to be the Spirit to them!

Oh absolutely, go for it girl 😀 it gives me the peace in my heart that I so desperately need when I ‘hand over’ my loved ones to The Only One who can save them… AND it helps me to remember that He loves them even more than I do!

Ok, that’s a hard one, but also freeing as we relinquish the responsibility of saving our family. Also reveals who we are putting our trust in as Savior… ourselves or Jesus. Really good perspective… shows too how even pronouns give specific meaning in Scripture!

This is the hardest…trusting Jesus with our family while we reach out to others in His name. It seems counter-intuitive, but works!
